Do You Need Pediatric Dental Coverage?
Pediatric dental coverage is generally like adult dental coverage, with a larger focus on preventive services. Don’t forget it’s likely your personal out-of-pocket dental expenses change each year. Be sure to review how much you spent on dental in the previous year. It’s good to keep in mind that “pediatric” dental coverages only apply to those through the age of 18.
HDS provides 100% coverage for preventive services for children. Preventive services like exams, cleanings, and sealants prevent tooth decay and damage. Be sure you’re visiting a Hawaii Dental Service in-network dentist.
Keep in mind that getting pediatric dental coverage isn’t enough! It’s essential to teach your child good oral health habits, like brushing, flossing, avoiding sugary foods and drinks, in addition to visiting the dentist twice a year.
What Can I Expect at My Child’s First Dental Visit?
Promote your child’s healthiest smile. Your dentist will check to make sure everything looks normal during development. We recommend bringing baby to the dentist within six months of getting their first tooth, and no later than their first birthday. Don’t wait much after they turn 1.
Why? Children who visit the dentist before age 1 have 40% less dental costs in the first 5 years than whose who waited. Additionally, the more your child sees the dentist, the more comfortable they will be!
Baby’s first visit to the dentist will include:
- A check for early decay
- An assessment of your child’s bite, facial growth and dental development
- A look for any problems with your baby’s head, neck, jaw, skin and soft tissues in and around the mouth
